Yoga – It’s all about the breath

Every class I teach, we emphasize the breath.  We can manipulate the breath to energize ourselves or as most classes go, to invite a relaxation response.  Our breath is so important, that in yogic philosophy, the breath (pranayama) has a limb all of its own.  When we think of our breath, we usually think about our lungs and diaphragm. This article by Tom Myers explains the role of the diaphragm and how it works synergistically with organs such as our heart and kidneys. I hope you enjoy the read and be sure to watch the video he has in the middle of the article. It’s fascinating!

The History of Yoga in a Podcast

Lately when I travel I listen to yoga podcasts.  One of my favorites is Yogaland with Andrea Ferretti, especially the podcasts where she and her husband Jason Crandell talk yoga.  Andrea was an editor at Yoga Journal for many years, and Jason is a renowned yoga teacher. The two cover a wide range of topics and their podcasts are always worth a listen. If you haven’t tuned in to the Yogaland podcasts, give them a try.  You’re in for a treat.

This week I decided to just search “yoga” on podcasts and found another gem titled The History of Philosophy in India.  It is a marvelous podcast series on the roots of yoga.  The podcast I listened to this week was HPI 29 – Practice Makes Perfect – Patanjali’s Yoga-Sutra from November 12, 2016.  I’ve included the link below.  I hope you listen and enjoy it as much as I did.  I’ll be listening to this one again and tuning in to more of this series for sure.  Enjoy.
